WTF Episode 305 with Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston

From WTF with Marc Maron | Part of the WTF with Marc Maron series | 54:00

Listen in for two surprising conversations with the stars of two AMC dramas: Mad Men and Breaking Bad

Jon-hamm-and-bryan-cranston-together-in-costume-18914-1311109316-56_small Despite Marc’s wishes to the contrary, Jon Hamm is not much like Don Draper at all. In a Cat Ranch chat, Jon reveals what it was like to grow up in St. Louis, why he hung around a lot of alternative comedy shows in the 90s, and why a role on Mad Men saved his career.

Then Bryan Cranston talks to Marc about what led him to the role of Walter White in Breaking Bad. Along the way he almost became a cop, worked alongside some carnies, and was briefly wanted for murder.

Moyers & Company Show 344: Facing Down Corporate Election Greed

From Moyers & Company | Part of the Moyers & Company series | 24:00

On Election Day, a small California city took on one of the biggest corporations in America… and declared victory. This week on Moyers & Company.

In the midst of the midterm elections and the obsession with which party would control the US Senate, there were races at the local and state level with deeper implications for the future of the country. In the small city of Richmond, California, a slate of progressive candidates faced off against a challenge from pro-business candidates backed to the tune of more than $3 million by the energy giant Chevron. For years, Chevron has treated Richmond like a company town and its large refinery there has been a constant source of health and safety concerns. Among children in Richmond, hospitalization for asthma is nearly twice the national rate. There has been a series of leaks and explosions, and smoke from a 2012 fire at the refinery sent 15,000 to area hospitals for treatment.

Since 2007, Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, a Green Party leader, and her allies on the city council have faced down not only Chevron but other corporate interests like the real estate and financial industries as well. This year, Chevron fought back with an expensive barrage of negative campaign media. But on Election Day, the progressive slate triumphed, despite the nearly $300 per vote Chevron spent.

On this week’s Moyers & Company, Gayle McLaughlin – who this year was term limited as mayor but won a city council seat -- and Harriet Rowan, a college student and journalist who uncovered the Chevron money story for the news website “Richmond Confidential,” talk with Bill Moyers about the role unlimited sums of corporate cash played in Richmond. They discuss the great success of the billions spent by wealthy individuals and companies in other races across the country and how to fight back, using Richmond’s example as a model for future fights of organized people versus organized money.

State of Siege: Mississippi Whites and the Civil Rights Movement

From American Public Media | Part of the American RadioWorks: Black History series | 59:00

State_of_siege_promo_image_prx_small Mississippi occupies a distinct and dramatic place in the history of America’s civil rights movement. No state in the South was more resistant to the struggle for black equality. No place was more violent. While the history of civil rights activists has been well documented in radio and television, the stories and strategies of their white opponents are less well known.

Using newly discovered archival audio, along with oral histories and contemporary interviews, State of Siege brings to light the extraordinary tactics whites in Mississippi used to battle integration. Their strategies ranged from organizing a massive network of citizens councils to promote white supremacy, to establishing a state-run spy agency to disrupt civil rights activism.

The program also traces the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, and illuminates the way whites came to both accommodate and defy the mandates of civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s. Ultimately, what happened during the civil rights era in Mississippi had a profound and lasting impact on American politics to the present day.
